Quick Start Program

Assessment and Capacity Building in Chemicals and Chemical Waste Management in Egypt

Background

The project “”Assessment and Capacity Building in Chemicals and Chemical Waste Management in Egypt” is implemented by the Egypt National Cleaner Production Centre in close cooperation with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The project is part of the implementation plan in the framework of the global initiative of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) which has been adopted by ICCM conference in Dubai in 2006. The Quick Start Programme (QSP) was created as financial mechanism for SAICM activities. The SAICM initiative is aiming to support implementation of national strategies of chemicals and chemical waste management in developing countries and countries in transition.

Scope and Target Sectors of the Project

The project planned duration is two years (2009-2011) and will be implemented in Egypt in 6th of October and Sadat industrial cities. The project is targeting the following industrial sectors:

  • Chemical sector
  • Other industrial sectors with intensive use of chemicals

  • Basel Convention Regional Centre in Cairo

Project Objectives

  • Evaluating the current situation of the management of chemicals and chemicals waste in the Egyptian industry
  • Building capacity for the optimization of chemicals usage and implementation of sound management of chemicals and chemicals waste.
  • Developing guidelines for the sound management of chemicals and chemical wastes, taking into account the concept of Cleaner Production.
  • Creating of a comprehensive database of the types of chemical waste generated from the industries in the two cities with the proposed solutions for the waste generated.
